about the speaker
Jude Kearney is Co-founder and Managing Director of Sovereign Energy Group and Founder and President of KearneyAfrica Legal Advisors, two related entities involved in the structuring and development of complex energy and infrastructure projects in Africa and other developing markets. He is immediate past Senior Partner and Africa Practice Chairman of international legal firm Greenberg Traurig LLP. His primary legal discipline is Project Finance and he was a pioneer in developing the concept of a dedicated Africa Practice within US legal firms. After more than thirty years in corporate legal practice, he has recently co-founded an energy investment company focused on the African continent and a boutique project development legal advisory firm.
Professional Credentials: Jude is well known in key regions of Africa, having focused on the continent as his workplace for the last 25 years. He has an extensive track record in the development and financing of energy assets throughout the continent.
He covers Energy development issues in the broad sense: he has developed projects in both the petroleum spectrum (upstream, midstream and marketing/distribution) and electric power spectrum (including advising on aspects of traditional coal and heavy fuel generation as well as newer renewable and clean generation). He has counted among his clientele major oil companies such as Mobil, Chevron and Shell, as well as many Sovereign Governments, such as Mozambique, Namibia, Kenya, Albania, Kosovo, Azerbaijan, Equatorial Guinea and many others.
Personal Background: Jude focused on Africa as the center of his professional career because of his first-hand pre-professional experiences on the continent starting in the early 1980’s. Having never set foot outside of the U.S. beforehand, he immersed himself in 1980 by choosing to use the Michael C. Rockefeller Traveling Fellowship he received from Harvard in 1980 to spend that year in Nigeria and West Africa. He resided again on the continent when he moved his young family to Johannesburg South Africa from 2000 to 2006.
Jude was born and raised in Gould, Arkansas, one of 19 children in a share-cropping family. That beginning, especially including his family’s poverty and the fact that his childhood was spent in the waning days of segregation, shaped his senses of fairness, hard work and achievement.
Jude graduated as a boarder from Western Reserve Academy in Hudson Ohio in 1976 and has an Economics Degree from Harvard (1980) and a Law Degree from Stanford University (1984).
